What Is Slate?

Slate is a foliated rock that is fine-grained, metamorphic, homogeneous, derived from sedimentary rock that is composed of volcanic ash. Slate is usually gray in it’s natural color but as you already know it can be featured in many colors. There are many different natural colors of slate also (which you’ve probably seen in a slate coffee table). For example, North Wales features slate that comes in different shades of grey such as lite to dark. North Wales also features slate that can come in colors such as cyan, purple, or green.

Slate is durable and naturally waterproof. Most of the time chemical sealants are used to improve slates durability and appearance. Also sealants are used to increase resistance to stain and reduce the smoothness of it’s surface. Slate can be used in many different facets such as coffee tables with slate, roofing, floor joists, walls, hedges, and more.

Slate also has some other characteristics such as it is fireproof, a good conductor of electricity, and is used in billiard table tops, blackboards, electric motors, and electric switchboards.
